Hundreds of Ottawa workers and supporters gathered outside Canada Post’s central office today to protest changes to the company’s services.

The building at the corner of Elgin and Sparks streets was swarmed by union members, employees and their supporters who continued their protest against upcoming changes to Canada Post’s delivery system.

Protesters gathered in front of the building holding signs saying “Save door-to-door” and showing a link to SaveCanadaPost.ca, which links to a petition opposing the upcoming changes to postage rates on March 31.

In December 2013, Canada Post announced that it would be phasing out home mail delivery and closing several post offices in an effort to cut losses.

According to the announcement, the phase-out would affect about five million homes and take place over five years.

The neighbourhoods that lose door-to-door delivery will instead be getting community mailboxes this fall.

Residents in Kanata will be among those affected by the first wave of changes, with three postal zones in the suburb switching over to the new system, the Ottawa Citizen reported.
